JEUDI 13 DECEMBRE, 16H, SALLE DES RESISTANTS ILM and LucasArts: Tales of film and game convergence Steve Sullivan Industrial Light & Magic Abstract: Everyone is talking about film-game convergence, Lucasfilm is actually doing it. Working side by side on the same codebase, LucasArts, ILM, and Lucas Animation are leveraging each others' expertise to create a unified set of technology for a new generation of entertainment. In this talk, we'll present some of the key technologies driving this collaboration, and discuss the successes, challenges, and limits in unifying their creative processes. Bio: Steve Sullivan joined Industrial Light & Magic in 1998 to develop computer vision techniques for visual effects production. Working within ILM's R&D group, he led a team creating systems for matchmoving, photogrammetry, image-based rendering, and motion capture. He has worked on over 50 films, and in 2002 received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the MARS motion and structure recovery system. Later in 2002, he became Director of Research and Development, and in 2004 initiated an effort to unify ILM film technologies and LucasArts game technologies in a common framework for all the Lucas companies. In 2007, Steve received a Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for ILM’s Image-based Modeling system. He currently leads the R&D effort for all the Lucas companies, creating next-generation artist technology for film, games, animation, and television.
