I am a Research Scientist at Safran Tech. Previously I was postdoctoral researcher at Inria Paris, within the Willow project team working with Josef Sivic and Ivan Laptev on video crowd analysis. I did a postdoc with Hervé Jégou at Inria Bretagne in 2014 working on kernelized visual descriptors for image retrieval and fine-grained classification within the FIRE-ID project. I have completed my PhD in 2012 at Mines ParisTech and Telecom Sudparis under the supervision of Françoise Prêteux and Titus Zaharia. During my PhD I worked on content-based video retrieval and on multimedia video navigation systems in a close cooperation with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs France. I took part of two industrial research projects on assistive technologies for visually impaired (ALICE) and digital cities (SmartCityPlus). I am a former student of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (BSc 2009).
My research interests concern computer vision and machine learning applied to all sorts of challenging tasks.

February 2017: New but old. Code for our kernelized local descriptor. Ranked 3rd on HBench.
November 2016: I left the Willow team and I am joining Safran Tech as Research Scientist.
November 2016: ACCV 2016 Outstanding Reviewer award.
October 2016: Our kernelized local feature descriptors (Continuous Patch Embeddings) were ranked 3rd in the recent HPatches Challenge at ECCV 2016.
In 2016 I've been reviewer for CVPR, ECCV, ACCV, ACMMM, TPAMI, CVIU and PRL.
As of May 1st 2015 I am doing a postdoc in the Willow team, working with Josef Sivic and Ivan Laptev on video crowd analysis.
Our paper on rotation and translation covariant match kernels for image retrieval has been accepted in CVIU.
Our work on kernel local descriptors with implicit rotation matching has been accepted for ICMR15.
We are organising a Micro-Workshop on Computer Vision on October 2nd 2014 at Inria Rennes.
Starting from March 1st 2014 I will do a postdoc at Inria in Rennes with Hervé Jégou. Exciting times ahead!
I gave a keynote talk on "Assistive technologies: experiences from AAL for the blind and visually impaired within the ALICE project" during the Innovation in Medicine and Healthcare Conference 2013, Piraeus, Greece, July 2013. Slides are available.

I'm a Sunday school volunteer teacher for Romanian kids in Paris.
During my undergrad period I was actively involved in BEST (Board of European Students of Technology) organising all sorts of events, traveling and trying to improve the lives of future engineers.
I'm fond of education and I have been representing students' views in the VM-BASE project and in the EUGENE network, where I was co-leading the Attractiveness of Engineering Studies track. I have been elected as member of the Admnistrative Council of SEFI (European Society for Engineering Education) 2010-2013.
